Journey from the Street to School

In a city full of street children sustaining themselves by begging, petty thefts and sleeping under flyovers, one often wonders why some children are denied a childhood. Lacking emotional and financial support from families (when they exist) these children seldom experience the basic joys of growing up. Disheartened by this sad reality, Wishes and Blessings aims to transform the lives of street children, by grooming, educating, and eventually integrating them into mainstream society. To initiate this journey, we launched a pilot project in May 2015, wherein we worked with 60 street children living in and around the vicinity of our shelter home in the Nizammudin. We began by teaching the very basics to these children - how to sit, talk, eat and inculcate basic manners. The natural progression from holding a chalk and scribbling on their black slates, to writing ABC, and finally writing their own names; was remarkable! Soon, our efforts paid off as 41 of these children got admission in MCD/Government schools; making project From Street…To School one of our biggest success stories.

Mass Marriages

Every girl dreams of getting married one day. However, some are not fortunate enough to turn this dream into a reality. At Wishes and Blessings, our main objective is to make dreams come true, and hence on the 27th of November 2016, we facilitated the weddings of 14 underprivileged girls in a mass wedding function. Belonging to different religious and socio-economic backgrounds, these girls were married according to their faith on that auspicious day. Around 2000 well-wishers attended the event and blessed the couples. The Wishes and Blessings family and friends participated in the ADHM 2016 to help raise funds to gift the 14 girls a dream wedding.

Journey from a Shelter to a Home

During the winter of 2014, Wishes and Blessings visited the Nizammudin rain basera as a part of its first winter drive. Appalled by the living conditions of the children and ladies residing there, we decided to transform the shelter to a home. Wishes and Blessings began this journey by bringing life into the worn off and dirty walls through beautiful flowers and bursts of vibrant colors. We immediately noticed a remarkable change in the children who could be seen laughing, playing, and enjoying themselves. We initiated elementary learning for the children, installed swings, a television and introduced a daily meal plan, wherein all residents received three hot and nutritious meals a day. We then started celebrating all festivals at our Wishes and Blessings home exposing our children to the rich and diverse culture of India. As a result, the rain basera was actually transformed into a beautiful home for 70 people- whose smiles and gratitude were among the greatest achievements for Wishes and Blessings. In May 2017, this home was demolished due to unforeseen and unfortunate circumstances. The children and ladies now live in another government home, but the way the Nizammudin Wishes and Blessings home changed the lives of so many under privileged people continues to inspire us till date.

Project Birthday Manao

Birthdays always call for a celebration and we believe that every child should be given the opportunity to enjoy their special day. Wishes and Blessings aims to celebrate each child’s birthday and create magical memories which the children will cherish forever. The “Birthday Manao” project is one of our flagship projects, through which we celebrate the birthdays of lesser privileged children to make them feel important and valued on their special day. Birthday Manao is hosted in many of our homes housing street, abandoned, orphaned and visually impaired children. Our children love the attention and importance they receive on this special day, resulting in a high self-esteem and a sense of belonging. Since its initiation, we have celebrated over 300 birthdays with loads of singing, dancing, refreshments, cakes and heart- warming moments!

Transforming Lives : Modi Mills

In May 2016, inspired by the success of our earlier projects with street children, Wishes and Blessings.decided to venture into a locality - Modi Mills. We welcomed 45 street children into a plain and lifeless Modi Mills rain basera. The rain basera was splashed with colors and intricate designs, the barren land was covered with grass and adorned with slides and swings. A teacher, caretaker and cook were recruited to ensure the daily requirements for the children are met and more importantly the children experience a structured life. We strived to inculcate basic manners and etiquettes, introduced them to prayers, exercises, wholesome living and also provided basic education. All this was possible through the help of the Wishes and Blessings donor family. As a result of our efforts, 35 of the 45 children secured admission in the local MCD/NDMC schools. Our Modi Mills street children now enjoy their daily routine which includes daily meals, prayers, exercise, study time as well as play time. Our volunteers and supporters regularly visit the children and are amazed at their progress, intelligence and creativity.
