Breaking Barriers, Building Futures: The Community-Led Impact of Sahas

Sahas, the skill development initiative of Wishes and Blessings, owes its inception and vision to the brilliant mind of Dr. Geetanjali Chopra. Her guidance has been instrumental in steering Sahas towards its mission of empowering individuals and communities. The journey commenced at Maidan Garhi on January 5, 2023. Motivated by the aspiration to improve the community, Sahas, the skill development initiative of Wishes and Blessings, set off on a transformative mission that would have a profound impact on people’s lives.

The first survey carried out at Prajapati Mohalla by Wishes and Blessings revealed a poignant reality: females in this community lacked the ability to be financially self-sufficient. The desire to learn tailoring skills emerged as a ray of hope for women who were facing financial hardships and societal norms that restricted their opportunities. The lack of financial resources acted as a major obstacle for numerous women who wished to pursue tailoring courses. However, Sahas recognized that there was a strong desire for financial independence and sought to address this issue by establishing the facility for skill development. The goal was to empower women by giving them resources to work remotely and enabling them to get over social constraints.

Establishing a skill development centre for women in a locality as challenging as Maidan Garhi was a difficult accomplishment. Nevertheless, due to continuous dedication and involvement in the community, Sahas experienced a positive and encouraging transformation. The team initially went door-to-door to tell people about the course and its potential benefits. The first outreach effort swiftly became a force to be reckoned with, as women eagerly volunteered and inspired others to follow suit.

In just one year, Sahas achieved the successful enrollment for training approximately 50 women in the fundamental skills of tailoring. This accomplishment did not simply involve teaching abilities; it revolved around fostering a feeling of empowerment. It was incredibly satisfying to see these women undergo a remarkable change, transitioning from eager learners to individuals possessing valuable practical abilities. Expanding on this achievement, Sahas implemented a more advanced training programme that lasts for a duration of six months. The aim was to build upon the skills of individuals who had finished the basic training, with the objective of making them highly skilled in the craft of tailoring. The women’s eagerness and commitment showcased their strong desire for learning and personal development.

An essential juncture in Sahas’ progression occurred during its ninth anniversary celebration of Wishes and Blessings, which seamlessly evolved into a charitable event benefiting Sahas. The occasion transcended being merely a gathering, as it embodied a commemoration of empowerment. It was truly captivating to witness the women of Sahas gracefully stepping out and taking part in an event that was specifically dedicated to celebrating their strength and accomplishments. The overwhelming response from sponsors, audience members, and other people validated their efforts.

The narratives of those who have benefited from Sahas vividly depict a profound metamorphosis and enhanced self-determination:

The Transformation Story of Kaushalya:

Kaushalya, originating from an economically disadvantaged background, became a member of Sahas during its initial stages. Her journey was truly extraordinary. Initially lacking literacy skills, she came to understand the importance of acquiring basic literacy in order to excel in drafting and pattern making. Her perseverance paid off, and she eventually became proficient in the craft of making clothes in addition to learning to read and write. During the training time, she found a haven, a rare window of time all her own in the middle of the responsibilities and duties of running the home. In addition to being economical, the act of creating garments through stitching not only resulted in financial savings for her family but also ignited her entrepreneurial drive. Presently, Kaushalya plans to launch her own custom tailoring business, a dream that had seemed unrealized prior to joining Sahas.

Saraswati’s Journey towards Enhancing Self-Confidence

Saraswati, a 19-year-old graduate, distinguished herself as one of Sahas’ most committed trainees. She envisioned herself as a fashion designer, aiming beyond just tailoring. Sahas has empowered her to display her talent with confidence. Making money from local initiatives boosted her recently acquired independence, leading to a significant increase in her self-assurance. In a conversation, she shared that her confidence, which used to be non-existent, had blossomed, giving her the belief that she could provide financial support for her family. Saving up to enroll in a fashion designing course, Saraswati embodies the spirit of determination and aspiration that Sahas has fostered.

Ruby – The Trainer’s Commitment

Ruby, the trainer at Sahas, has played a crucial role in this journey of growth and change. Since the organization was established, she has been unwavering in her commitment to educate and empower women, displaying tireless dedication. In addition to teaching tailoring, she goes the extra mile by dedicating thirty minutes of each class to educate women who previously had little to no schooling experience. Ruby’s encounters with women who face financial hardship and domestic abuse have bolstered her knowledge of their difficulties, significantly enhancing her understanding. She feels extremely lucky to be involved in this project, where she puts her utmost effort to ensure that these women become financially self-reliant and empowered.

The Sahas project is a prime example of how skill development can bring about remarkable transformations. Not only has it taught women a specific skill, but it has also boosted their confidence, enabling them to support themselves and gain a sense of empowerment. Sahas remains a source of hope, gradually turning dreams into successes by taking small, determined steps.

This journey demonstrates the significant impact that community-led initiatives can have on societies. By demonstrating persistence, commitment, and faith in the abilities of all individuals, Sahas has generated a ripple effect that promotes empowerment, cultivating a community in which women are not simply students, but catalysts for transformation. As Sahas develops under the guidance of Dr.Chopra, it continues to be a source of empowerment and inspiration, transforming the lives of women who, instead of just hoping for a better future, are now actively working to accomplish it.
