Anupriya Sinha, Programme Officer at Wishes and Blessings, experienced her first field visit while distributing and serving milk to homeless and underprivileged children across Delhi/NCR on the occasion of Mahashivratri. Read on for her first-hand experience!
I have worked in the social sector for three years, but I have never had the opportunity to get out there in the field, meet the beneficiaries or see their day-to-day struggles. So, when I was asked if I wanted to be a part of the milk distribution drive for underprivileged children that took place on the day of Mahashivratri, I was excited and eager to participate.
Our first stop was the Modi Mills Day Care Centre, where I was amazed by how beautifully the centre was painted. The kids were almost finished with their lunch when we arrived, and they all warmly welcomed us. Once they were done with their lunch, we asked everyone to gather outside the centre, and all of them knew we’d brought something for them, as we could see how excited they were to see the boxes of milk that we were carrying. We began by handing out glasses of milk to all of the children. I could see their enthusiasm and how eagerly they awaited their turn. It made me so happy to see how much they liked it. Some of them were seated in a circle, sipping milk from their glasses, while others were playing on the slides.
For me, it was an emotional experience. I realized how I take little things for granted at times but watching those kids made me understand how happy they are for every moment.
We went on to other places to distribute milk once we finished with our first centre. After covering the streets of Jamia Nagar, Lodhi Road, Nizamuddin, and Begumpur, we also served a large number of street children near the IIT Flyover.
The best part of the milk distribution campaign, in my opinion, was seeing the children’s enthusiasm and witnessing how just one glass of milk could bring them so much joy. For the whole team, it was a long and stressful day, but seeing the difference we made was worth the effort.
