In wake of the recent events of humanitarian abuse in Afghanistan, here are a few poems which capture the dread, suffering, and horrifying experiences ordinary people have to endure when war and violence disrupt the homeland.
Walk Home
Feet shuffle on the sandy soil
Underneath lies a wooden stage,
But the echoes in the auditorium
With the black ceiling, it seems so real.
Feet shuffle on the sandy soil
And she is sure she can hear,
A shriek in the distance
Should she even try now?
Would they bother gagging her?
Her cries for help would act as an alarm call,
That would allow the rest to scatter into their caves
Those in the forest aren’t half so harsh.
Futility, impuissance-they are but strange sounds
That translate her rapid heartbeat.
Feet shuffle faster,
But she knows she’ll never reach.
There is nowhere to reach
Fear split in her spine,
And stole her gut
Sometimes we lose before we’ve even begun.
Stationary and Stationery
Pins and paper
They were just pins and paper,
Resting on a grand floral tablecloth
Pins and paper
They were just pins and paper,
Representing a grand tragic genocide.
Oppression
It is the key behind growth of,
The chemical bombs dropped on Kurdish
A sudden and efficient end to the innocent;
To the innocence of fragile orphans
Oppression.
Desperation
Looking into the eyes,
Of the corrupt and the corrupted
Knowing yourself as their sole mouthpiece,
Blocking out the shattering screams
Desperation.
Selfishness
The uncontrollable desire,
Of seeing yourself at a pedestal
Selfishness.
Perhaps it will lead
To the egocentric’s demise,
Or perhaps all in the world
Is not right,
And even the evil is taught
How to rise.
