A very Happy Independence Day to the entire Wishes and Blessings family! Here’s an account of Dr. Geetanjali Chopra‘s experience of celebrating Independence Day with the beneficiaries of Wishes and Blessings for the very first time…
In August 2015, three months after Wishes and Blessings had formally set up our first Home for street children in Nizamuddin, we decided to celebrate Independence Day at the centre. The children started preparing dance and song performances and the excitement levels were soaring.
It was the first time we were hosting a huge celebration at the centre… the occasion was extremely symbolic as we were slowly yet steadily working towards freedom from begging, rag picking and misery for street children.
Amidst this, I was struggling to find a ‘chief guest’ to grace the occasion and unfurl our flag. I was rather surprised when the team suggested that I should hoist the flag. The children too echoed the emotions of the team and I reluctantly agreed.
My reluctance was due to the fact that I had always seen ‘eminent’ people do such honours and, more importantly, I felt it was a huge responsibility to hoist the flag and I wasn’t sure if I was ready for it.
I still remember on 15th August 2015, I was extremely nervous and almost scared when I reached the centre. The centre was decorated in tri-colours and the children were all dressed up and on their best behaviour. While conversing with them, I felt a transformation in their outlook, attitude and approach towards life. I realised I had achieved a milestone and suddenly I felt a surge in confidence.
For the first time in my life, I unfurled our National Flag and led the children and team to our Anthem. With tears in my eyes and pride in my chest, I too echoed Bharat Mata ki Jai!!
We then planted trees at the centre with the help of the children. This was followed by mesmerizing performances and a small treat. I had just experienced the best Independence Day celebration ever!
