Celebrating the Elderly!

The elderly are full of wisdom and worldly knowledge owing to their lived experiences. This is why we approach older people for guidance and often take their advice before making important decisions. Unfortunately, in the era of fast-moving life we tend to forget or become ignorant towards their needs. Furthermore, Covid has not only imposed restrictions but also posed great risks towards the mental and physical well-being of the aged. It is important to understand their struggles and support them – no strings attached – just as they do.

What is International Day for the Elderly?

The 1st of October is celebrated as the International Day of Older People. This is done to raise awareness and start a dialogue about things which affect the aged such as elder abuse. It is also celebrated to honour and respect the elderly, show appreciation for their contributions towards society.

The theme for 2021 is “Digital Equity for All Ages”. The theme aims to throw light on the issue of adaptation to modern technology faced by the aged. Technology has drastically revolutionized everyday life, more so in the Covid scenario. This is why training the elderly to use technology for their own interests and needs, warning them of the safety hazards associated with the same is necessary.

How can we celebrate this day?

Spend some time!

Spend time with your grandparents or other older people living in your neighbourhood. Talk to them about things that interest them, ask questions, and make them feel heard.

Participate in activities!

Engage the elderly in fun activities including gardening!

Participate in some activity with elders such as gardening or playing a game of chess. If you do not live with elders, you can also virtually engage them in some form of leisure tasks. Eg-baking with each other on a video call.

Acts of love!
The elderly appreciate reading letters!

Simple acts of love and appreciation can go a long way in making the elderly feel happy and less isolated. Making a greeting card or sending a bouquet of flowers are just two of the many ways to do so.

Visit old age homes or NGOs!

While it is important to care for our family, including elders, it is equally important to give love to others who are not as privileged to have their own family. One such act of kindness of yours can be the reason for someone’s happiness! There is nothing these people can be more thankful for than others taking out the time to talk to and understand them.
