International Youth Day 2022: What Is The Importance?

International Youth Day is celebrated every year on the 12th of August, this day is dedicated to the Youth to play a vital role in bringing about change in handling global issues and achieving sustainable development. International Youth Day emphasizes the rights of young people to have full access to education, healthcare, employment, monetary services, and complete participation in public life.

International Youth Day 2022 Theme

This year’s International Youth Day 2022 Theme is ‘building a better world for our children’. There are over 1.7 billion young people in the world and half the proportion of the young generation lives in developing countries. 42% of the world population is under the age of 25. India tops the list with 356 million young people as the country with the world’s largest population.

This day emphasizes the power of youth and also provides them with a chance to explore creative thinking to build a better future. There are so many crucial issues that exist in the world such as poverty, hunger, unemployment, etc. Youth can be involved in efficient ways to eradicate such issues from the world.

International Youth day 2022 promotes a way to engage youngsters in making positive contributions to their communities.

Some International Youth Day 2022 Activities that youth can use to give back to the society are:

Educate the Underprivileged

‘Imparting knowledge will only ever increase it’

Despite the steady rise in literacy, 773 million people are still deprived of education around the world. One can volunteer and teach the underprivileged section of society by enrolling them into an NGO. It will not only increase the literacy rate but will also imbibe diverse skills in them.

Wishes and Blessings’ ‘Squad for Change’ is one such platform, we host more than 700 volunteers every week at our centre and conduct weekly teaching sessions with the children. Children also enjoy the interactions and learn new things each day.

“Sometimes, it falls upon a generation to be great. You can be that great generation. Let your greatness blossom.”

Donate Food

Currently, around 690 million people go unfed each day. To eradicate hunger from society, one can conduct ration drives for the needy. Wishes and Blessings has been working on hunger eradication for the past 8 years through their Daily Meals Programme.

In one such episode where  Ramaira (our volunteer),  visited Wishes and Blessings’ Old Age Home and witnessed the plight of the underprivileged, she was urged to find solutions to the massive existing issue of hunger. As a response to her experience, she initiated a fundraising campaign in her individual capacity where she is aiming to feed more than 20 Ammas and Uncles at our Old Age Home.

Share Your Skills

Having a skill is a blessing. One can share this blessing with those in need by conducting a skills workshop as per their expertise for the underprivileged. This will also eventually help them get ready for better employment opportunities.

Wishes and Blessings aims to conduct such workshops regularly. Recently, a candle-making workshop for needy women was conducted on ‘Skill Development Day’ to enable these women later to start something on their own.

As rightly said ‘Youth is not a time of life: it is a state of mind it is a matter of the will, quality of the imagination, a vigor of the emotions”

Lend Help to those in need

Whenever we see a problem in our surroundings, as responsible citizens, we must always come forward to help, because youth is what defines the future of the country. Wishes and Blessings does its best to engage youth into their programmes.

In alignment with the theme of ‘International Youth Day 2022’ – building a better world for our children, here are some experiences that young volunteers at Wishes and Blessings shared:

“My idea of a better change is when all of us, collectively become much more aware -and conscious of the needs of our society and initiate targeted actions toward making it a better place for all.”

Vishnupriya Gaur, JMC

“We the youth are the future. It’s in our hands to mould the surroundings. The power to make a change that we need and the one which is better for ourselves and the coming generations.

My idea of better change is to change the lifestyle we live and adopt more eco-friendly ways of living and come together and live a happy healthy life.”

Anjali, Sushant University

“As the youth, we’ve been told time and again that we’re the future of the country and that we hold the power to mould the destiny of our nation. There are many ways one can do so but the most powerful way to bring about a change is through Education and Volunteering.

Through education we empower ourselves but through volunteering, we help others empower themselves. Volunteering drives us to build a stronger foundation for our community and to me, that is the idea of a ‘better change’”

Rudrakshi, Northern State Medical University, Russia

“According to me, better change comes into play when we learn how to embrace discomfort and utilize it to identify things that are holding us back. Any sort of change allows us to move ahead in life and be open to experiencing new and exciting things.”

“Being aware, acknowledging, and working towards it helps in evolving ourselves. Better change cannot happen overnight. Taking small, thoughtful steps is essential to achieving the change one wants to see.”

Rakshita, Amity University

“Better change for me begins with ourselves. As soon as we start acknowledging and accepting our life and work towards the better only then we can help others do the same.

“Every story begins at home and so does this idea of moving towards a better world. The way we see ourselves has a lot to do with how we perceive the world. So, I strive to become a better person and do my part to help others!”

Kuhu Sarin, Flame University

“We are the future of tomorrow small changes in ourselves can bring a big change in the future”

Jayant Agarwal, Modern School, Barakhamba

We, as the youth, are full of energy, ideas, and dreams that we channel toward our bright futures. Contributing just a piece of this energy and youthfulness towards social betterment is important and can undoubtedly create change.
