Youth Lights Intern visits shelter: Modi Mills Day Care Centre

Through the course of our in-house summer internship programme ‘Youth Lights‘, the interns get a chance to visit the Wishes and Blessings centres across Delhi/NCR. The interns get an opportunity to interact with beneficiaries from various backgrounds and of various ages.

Here is your chance to find out what Aliza Junaid experienced at her first visit to the Modi Mills Day Care Centre!

Throughout the course of your life, you meet certain people who are bundles of joy. When you talk to them, you won’t be able to tell that they’re deprived of the basic needs of life. Because these people have such wide smiles on their faces all the time, they’re more than eager to learn, they’re always excited to play and have fun, they’re filled with the desire to fulfil their dreams and goals. They will welcome you with open arms even though you’re a complete stranger to them, they will bond with you in seconds as salt dissolves in water.

This is exactly how my experience at the Modi Mills Day Care Centre was. The second I walked through the doors, I was hit with a wave of enthusiasm as the children screamed, “Hi Didi,” and that uplifted my spirits to a level I can’t begin to describe. They have such big, kind hearts; they would make you a birthday card and make your special day even more special by singing you the birthday song.

The heat doesn’t bother them. They don’t care if they have to live without an air conditioner; the hot summer breeze works just fine for them, it makes them immune to any injury that is caused to them while playing a game, say, of football. Lying in front of the cooler and taking in the refreshing whiffs on their faces is far more livening than any A/C.

And you know what my favourite part about this visit was? The game of antakshari. And these kids rocked it! Abhishek, a boy of 9-10 years of age, knows all 90’s Bollywood songs and he sang them all with such energy that he left me baffled. Without a doubt (I’m trying not to pick sides), he’s the one I admire the most of all the kids. These kids knew of songs even I haven’t ever heard or known about.

Needless to say, this is the most fun I’ve had in a really long time!

Aliza Junaid is a student of Jesus and Mary College and claims she is bad at describing herself. Fond of reading, coffee, mountains and rain, she claims to have an uncanny fascination with clouds and the ocean. A young aspiring woman, Aliza wants to bring a good change in the world around her. And in the process, maybe in herself, too.
